ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Exam 2015 - 2016 requirements

You need to score at least 100 (out of 150) in the the exam to pass.

Here's what you need to do in the exam -

1.  Play 3 pieces
You need to play 3 pieces - one piece from each of the 3 lists (A, B & C).  See the pieces here.

You can achieve a maximum of 90 marks for your pieces (30 marks per piece).

2.  Play scales and broken chords
You need to play at least one scale, one scale a third apart, one scale a sixth apart, one legato scale in thirds, one chromatic scale a minor third apart, one chromatic scale in minor thirds, one whole tone scale, one arpeggio, one dominant seventh scale and one diminished seventh scale.

You may be asked to play more - the examiner will decide - so you need to learn all scales, arpeggios, etc, just in case (see them here).

You must play all scales, broken chords, etc, from memory.

You can achieve a maximum of 21 marks for this section.

3.  Sight read a piece
You need to sight read a piece of music - up to a page long.  You can have half a minute to look through the piece.

4.  Aural Tests
With Aural Tests you need to repeat music via singing or playing, also to listen to music and answer questions about it.
